Heating an above ground pool can extend your swimming season and enhance your pool experience. At Leisure King, the Kayak® Pool Guys, we’ve been helping families enjoy their pools to the fullest for almost thirty years. We have witnessed firsthand what works and what doesn’t work when heating an above ground pool. We’d like to share what we’ve learned about heating an above-ground pool and what you can expect with different heating methods.
Above Ground Pool Heating Options
There are several ways to heat an above ground pool, each with its own advantages.
Solar Covers
Solar covers are an affordable and eco-friendly option. They capture and retain heat from the sun, warming your pool water naturally. Expect a gradual increase in temperature and reduced evaporation.
Solar Heaters
A solar heater can be installed and connected to your pool. Solar heaters absorb sunlight and convert it into heat, which can be transferred to your pool water. This option is more efficient than other heater options but is dependent on the direction of the sun, the time of day, the time of year, and the weather.
Electric Heaters
Electric heaters are easy to install and can heat your pool quickly. They’re ideal for smaller pools or for those who don’t use their pool frequently. However, they can increase your electricity bill.
Gas Heaters
Gas heaters are powerful and can heat your pool rapidly, making them perfect for cooler climates or last-minute heating needs. However, they require a gas line and are more expensive to operate than electric heaters, as the fuel source can be pricy.
Heat Pumps
Heat pumps, such as the AquaCal® Heat Pump, offer an eco-friendly and cost-effective solution for maintaining the perfect temperature in your above ground pool.
These energy-efficient pumps utilize heat from the air, providing significant savings compared to traditional gas and electric heaters. AquaCal Heat Pumps feature a microprocessor-controlled system with a digital display for accurate temperature settings, a Thermalink titanium heat exchanger for fast and efficient heating, and a quiet scroll compressor for reliability and durability. Relative to other heating methods, AquaCal Heat Pumps create a more manageable monthly expense and are more eco-friendly.
Considerations for Heating Your Pool
When deciding how to heat your above ground pool, consider the following.
Pool Size
The size of your pool will determine the type of heater you need. Larger pools require more powerful heaters, while smaller pools can be heated efficiently with smaller units or solar covers.
Climate
Your local climate will impact your heating choice. Solar options are more effective in sunny regions, while a heater or heat pump may be necessary in cooler areas.
Usage
Consider how often you use your pool and how warm you want it to be. If you’re a frequent swimmer or prefer warmer water, a more powerful heating system may be needed.
Budget
Heating your pool comes with initial costs and ongoing expenses. Balance your upfront investment with the long-term operating costs to find a solution that fits your budget.
Tips for Efficient Pool Heating
To get the most out of your pool heating system, follow these tips.
Use a Pool Cover
A pool cover can significantly reduce heat loss, especially at night. It’s a simple and effective way to retain warmth in your pool.
Maintain Your Heater
Regular maintenance ensures that your heater operates efficiently. Clean filters and check for any signs of wear and tear.
Optimize Your Heating Schedule
Heat your pool during off-peak hours to save on energy costs. Consider using a timer to control your heater’s operation.
Insulate Your Pool
Proper insulation can prevent heat loss. Ensure that your pool walls and floor are well-insulated, especially if you live in a cooler climate.
What to Expect
Heating your above ground pool can transform your swimming experience. Expect warmer water, extended swimming seasons, and more enjoyable pool time with family and friends. Be prepared that heating your above ground pool will carry an initial setup cost, and operating your pool will cost more depending on the heating method you choose. However, it can be more than worth it for the extended swim season. Reach out to Leisure King, the Kayak Pool Guys, for advice on how to heat your above ground pool.

With winter quickly approaching, how do you know when it is time to winterize your beautiful pool?
Our experts at Leisure King are here to help you wade through this question of pool care and any other questions you may have!
We can make things so simple you will be a pool care expert in no time at all.
Watch the Temperature Closely to Know When to Winterize Your Beautiful Pool
The easiest way to know it is time to close things up for winter is to keep an eye on the temperature.
Since we build stunning Kayak Pools all over the east coast, the specific month time frame can vary greatly. Watching the temperature will ensure you take the necessary steps at the perfect time.
Once your local temperatures are CONSISTENTLY staying below 65℉, you can consider it time to winterize your beautiful pool.
Why 65℉?
This particular temperature is our key to success because, at this temperature, algae is less likely to start growing under a covered pool.
If the weather is consistently hotter, your pool water can start growing unwanted bacteria, including the dreaded algae.
Once the temperature is consistently lower, then your pool water is safe to be covered and left with the winterizing chemicals needed to keep it safe until spring.
Some Areas of the US May Not Need to Winterize Their Pool
For our customers who live further south, like in Florida, you do not need to close your pool for the winter unless you want to.
You can skip the extra steps and just keep an eye on your weather. Should the temperatures drop below freezing on a specific day or two, you can leave your pump running to keep things from freezing.
You can also grab a pool heater to prolong the swim season of your pool. This will keep the water warmer longer into the fall and even let you take a dive earlier in the spring.
There is always a risk of pipes freezing should you have an especially cold spell, but it is up to each home if you want to take that risk or not.
We know it is very common for you to choose to leave your pool open year-round due to mild winters.
Grab a Winterizing Kit When It’s Time.
When the temperatures start to feel a little cooler grab a kit with everything you need. This will make winterizing your water quick and easy.
We can help you make sure you have everything you need to keep your water clear until the spring.
Simply clean, add water care, and cover. Your pool will be safe until you are ready to reopen in the spring.

If you’re considering installing an above-ground pool for your backyard, a Kayak Pool is a great option. With its unique filtration system, Kayak Pools offers several advantages that other pool models simply can’t match. Not only is it a top-of-the-line dual filtration system, it virtually eliminates the need for weekly pool maintenance.
Why is a Pool Filtration System so Important?
A pool filtration system is important in a pool because it helps to keep the water clean and safe for swimming. Without proper filtration, the water in a pool can quickly become dirty, cloudy, and even dangerous to swim in.
Here are a few key reasons why a pool filtration system is important:
Removes debris: The pool filtration system helps to remove debris such as leaves, bugs, and dirt that can accumulate in the pool over time. If left unchecked, this debris can cause the water to become cloudy and unsanitary.
Removes contaminants: In addition to removing visible debris, the filtration system also helps to remove invisible contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that can be harmful to swimmers.
Maintains chemical balance: A properly functioning pool filtration system can help to maintain the chemical balance of the water, ensuring that the pH levels and chlorine levels are within safe and healthy ranges.
Improves circulation: The filtration system helps to circulate the water in the pool, which can prevent stagnant areas where bacteria and other contaminants can accumulate.
Kayak Pools Filtration Advantages
1. Maximum Filtration Power
The heart of the Kayak Pool filtration system is a powerful dual filter. This includes a skimmer basket that captures larger debris and particles from the surface, a sand filter to capture smaller particles and organisms, and cartridge filters to capture even more microscopic particles that remain in your pool water. These filters are designed for maximum efficiency – they’ll help keep your pool water pristine and crystal-clear.
2. Easy Maintenance
The dual filtration system is designed to make weekly pool vacuuming a thing of the past. The Kayak’s exclusive filtration design works continuously, constantly filtering the pool water and eliminating contaminants before they have a chance to settle on the pool’s walls and floors.
3. It’s Safe for Swimmers
Other pool filtration systems use features like bottom suction drains, which can pose a safety issue for smaller swimmers. The Kayak above-ground pool uses an atmospheric release system that redirects suction to another drain. This unique and innovative system works to keep both curious swimmers and wayward pool toys safe.
4. It Works with any Kayak Pool Size
The Kayak dual filtration system is available for all pool models, so you can enjoy the same advantages regardless of the size of your pool. Whether you’re looking to install a small 12-foot round or an extra large 16×32 oval, the Kayak Pool offers unmatched filtration power and ease of maintenance. It’s also compatible with any of our deck configuration options, so no matter which Kayak above-ground pool you choose, you’ll enjoy this incredible filtration system.
When it comes to swimming pools, Kayak Pools has an unmatched filtration system. With its maximum filtration power, safety features, and easy maintenance, you can enjoy crystal-clear pool water all season long without sacrificing safety. Invest in a quality above-ground pool with Kayak Pools today!
